Speaking With Your Vet

As you see your dog everyday you may notice symptoms of canine osteoarthritis that your vet may not be able to pick up on if you only see him or her once a year for your dog's annual booster. These could include changes in behaviour, difficulty standing or climbing, or reluctance to go for walks.

If you think your dog is showing signs of the condition, speak with your vet for an assessment and if necessary to prepare a management programme. Some key tips to consider are:

  • Let your vet know the signs of canine osteoarthritis you have observed, such as difficulty standing or climbing, tiring, lameness and behavioural changes.
  • Remind your vet of any other medical problems or allergies that your dog may already have, or has had in the past, including any medication the dog may be receiving.
  • Weigh your dog - excess weight can put extra pressure on your dog's joints. Your vet will be able to advise on the importance of weight control in the management of canine osteoarthritis and if necessary advise on a weight management programme. This may include specific dietary changes as well as exercise. Marge Chandler, Expert in Small Animal Internal Medicine, provides advice on weight management and nutrition.
  • Check the notice board in your local veterinary surgery as there might be a local walking group you can join or advisory information on controlled exercise and a healthy diet.
  • Discuss the various treatment options available to find the one that would work best for your dog and fit with your lifestyle, so you can balance your dog’s needs with a busy work or family life.

You and your vet can work together to prepare a successful programme, making the management of canine osteoarthritis a walk in the park.
